I’ve been homeschooling for over a decade now and let’s just say… I’ve had just as many ups and downs on this homeschooling journey as I’m sure that you have.
Some days go well.
And other days we had been left in tears because, let’s face it— not everyday is a bed of roses in the homeschooling world.
However, throughout the good times and the bad, there is one area that I have grown my confidence in and that’s what I want to share with YOU today.
YOU are qualified to homeschool your kids!
Now, I mention this because, especially after creating this Embracing Homeschool and meeting and chatting with so many homeschool mamas, I’ve heard the infamous, “Well, I don’t feel qualified to homeschool or teach my kids!”.
Mic drop.
Say what?!
I mean, let’s be real here.
Have you ever struggled with the thought of:
“What if i’m not qualified to teach my kids and what if they won’t learn enough?”
If you answered YES, then this blog post is SO for you today.
If there has been a doubt or question in your mind, keep reading dear mama, keep reading, because I put together 7 simple reasons why you ARE qualified to homeschool!
7 Reasons Why You ARE Qualified to Homeschool Your Kids
#1. You’re an adult.
Okay this is almost a DUH, but hear me out. Whether you’ve finished high school or not, you are an adult. And since you’re an adult, you have an adult’s mind and the capability and knowledge to learn tough things, even when you don’t know them yet.
Are you an adult? Perfect! You’re qualified to homeschool!
#2. You don’t need a college degree.
Now I can’t speak for every single place in the world, but I know at least for most states in the U.S., you do not need any college degree or even a high school diploma to homeschool your kids.
So what does this mean? This means that even if you didn’t even finish high school, you are still fully capable and qualified of homeschooling. As long as there’s a desire to learn and grow and excel, you’ll be golden!
Do you have or maybe don’t have a high school diploma or college degree? Perfect! You’re still qualified to homeschool!
#3. You’ll be learning with your kids
Okay I want to hit on this hot topic of not feeling adequate or smart enough to teach your children because of your own school career, or lack thereof. Don’t let your own school experience, or lack of degrees cause you to question if you’re capable enough.
You are going to be amazed at the amount of information you will be learning right along with your kiddos while homeschool.
Like history facts! Wow I can’t even believe how much history I’ve grasped since homeschooling my own kids.
Math concepts I struggled with as a kid… make so much more sense to me now! Why? Because I had to LEARN it right along with my kids as I TAUGHT them.
So, if you don’t feel “smart” enough, don’t worry. You’ll be super smart once your homeschooling career is done! 👈And that should be worthy of a degree, shouldn’t it?!
Can you learn right along with your kiddos? Perfect! You’re qualified to homeschool!
#4. There’s outside help (Hey mama! You don’t have to do it all alone!)
Listen— When you get to the point where your children are learning something you don’t know, don’t fret because there’s outside help.
There’s this handy little thing nowadays called Google, and when you simply don’t understand something, just Google it!
Chances are, you’ll find a great tutorial that will break it down for you, so you can be able to either teach your child, or share the same tutorial with them to help them.
Thinking of things like that dreaded high school math (psssh, who am I kidding? Middle school math is tough too!) or science that most of us are wondering how in the world we’ll teach it… yeah don’t worry. You can get help (Google, tutorials, tutors, friends, family members) to come in and help teach that part. No biggie!!
Do you have access to Google or other outside help? Perfect! You’re qualified to homeschool!
#5. You’re their mother
Since God has chosen you to be your children’s mother, He knew you’d be the perfect candidate to raise and teach them. Therefore, you can do ALL things through Christ which strengthens you, and if you feel like you need some help, just ask Him! Praying for wisdom is something God said he would give to us liberally! And since you’re their mother, you are fully equipped, capable and qualified to homeschool your kids. If God didn’t see you fit to raise up those kiddos of yours, he would have given them to someone else.
Are you the mother of your children, whether by natural birth, fostering or adoption, etc.? Perfect! You’re qualified to homeschool!
#6. Learning isn’t boxed in
Learning and knowledge are so much more than what’s being taught from school books. Real life skills and character training is learning, reading a book is learning, gardening is learning. Learning isn’t held down to just what’s on paper. If they’re retaining it; they’re learning!
Are you capable of reading to your children, cooking with them, taking them to the grocery store, teaching them how to clean, etc.? Perfect! You’re qualified to homeschool!
#7. They’re always learning something new
Your children are ALWAYS learning. Whether it be during school hours at the table while working in their workbooks— OR, when they’re cooking with you in the kitchen, washing laundry, helping you grocery shop, reading a book, and, and, AND! They’re always learning something!
Are your children retaining some sort of knowledge when you teach them? Perfect! You’re qualified to homeschool!
Now, I’m going to shout it from the rooftops errrr… my dining room and at my computer rather…
✨ You ARE qualified to homeschool your children.
✨ You ARE capable of homeschooling your children.
✨ You ARE the best candidate to teach your children.
Okay, take a big breath in and breathe it out. Let those fears of inadequacy begin to dissipate.
You are qualified to homeschool, mama!
